Although most interest centred on The Beatles, P.J. Proby's appearance
on "Around The Beatles" did not go unnoticed, and he made sure of that,
for he was certainly different to anyone else we had ever seen before on
the music scene. He introduced the male pony tail to the 20th
century and added a bow for good measure. Most people in Australia
at the time thought this was too way out but if they weren't impressed
with what became his trademark pony tail hair style, he made up for it
with his good looks and awesome voice.
Proby sang three songs on the show, "Walkin'
The Dog", "Cumberland Gap",
and a brilliant rendition of "I Believe". |

The elusive success that James Marcus Smith
had set out from Houston to Hollywood to achieve in 1957, evolving
as Jett
Powers and Orville Woods along the way, finally arrived in the guise
of P.J.
Proby, virtually overnight following the worldwide
telecast of "Around The Beatles." He hit it
BIG
and his European success was echoed in the Australian charts with "Hold Me",
followed by "Together",
"Somewhere", "I Apologise" and "Mission Bell" all
hitting the charts here in rapid succession prior to
his 1965 Australian tour.
